Comfort Comfort

I think its true to say that we all would choose comfort over discomfort! For some of us our comfort comes in the form of a recliner chair with remote control in hand and our favourite beverage. For others it is comfort food such as chocolate or a big bowl of ice-cream drizzled with your favouirte topping and sprinkled with chocolate bits. For still others it’s the warm embrace and hugs of from people who stick with you. For others it’s the security of employment.

These thing may indeed bring comfort. However Isaiah 40:1-11 suggest, that our true comfort, is found  firstly in the truth that we are identified by God as His people (40:1) despite our incompatible behaviour that deserves punishment. God intends that we will have a future together. Secondly our comfort is found in God’s command to speak “tenderly to us” (40:2). Compassion, not condemnation, should determine how we are treated. Thirdly, our comfort is found in the clear declaration in verse 2 of release from debt to sins. It is the release from debt — not the efforts to satisfy the debt — that brings comfort. Fourthly, our comfort is found (Isaiah 40:9) as we are involved in voicing comfort to others.   Fifthly, our comfort is found in the LORD’s coming. The arrival will be one of divine splendour revealing “the glory of the LORD (verse 5).”

Finally, our comfort is found (40:10-11) in the reality that God chooses to be involved in our future. The deepest comfort and greatest joy is the power of God at work in our midst, providing, protecting and guiding us with gentleness.
True comfort, indeed.
